Born in 1922 and educated at the École Supérieure des Beaux-Arts d’Indochine (College of Fine Arts of Vietnam). One critic characterized him in this way:
“Mr. Dzu-Hong is the painter of powerful eclogues (pastoral scenes) a little mannered, but which have a kind of rustic flavor not without charm.” His works show the influences of both traditional Chinese and modern French art.
Hong worked in a variety of media including watercolor, ink and lacquer. One of Hong’s most exceptional lacquer pieces—a diptych—was commissioned by former Vietnamese President Ngô Đình Diệm just prior to his assassination in 1963. It was eventually purchased by a member of the American military who brought it to the United States.
Hong worked as a teacher at the Gia Định College of Fine Arts from 1958 to 1975 before it merged with the National Fine Arts College of Saigon to become the Fine Arts College of Hồ Chí Minh City. Tran Dzu Hong died in 2002.
